Redbuds start off the year with a bang. In April this tree wakes for spring with long lasting, very showy, pink buds. Attractive heart shaped leaves follow. This tree is easy to care for & makes a great focal point in the yard. Redbuds are native throughout all of Missouri & are cold hardy zones 4-8. They grow fast & flower at a younger age than most trees: 4-6 years.
The trick to redbuds is getting them established early. They develop a taproot quite early on & don't like to be moved. Transplants over a couple months old have a very high mortality rate. If you want to grow a redbud tree, transplant volunteers when they are very tiny or purchase a container grown tree to plant. They tolerate all sorts of lighting, deer, clay soils, black walnut allelopathy & a variety of soils. They prefer well-draining, medium moist soils but volunteers pop up in my yard & will grow in all sorts of crazy spots. It won't tolerate wet fee though.
The University of Tennessee says no trees should be planted within 10' of plumbing or sewer lines, however they recommend this tree outside those 10 feet. It's growth habit makes it a better choice near homes.
