Full Sun to Part Sun
Bright Light
Dry Soil
Easily grown in bright windows & in small containers. Let soil completely dry out in between waterings. Full sun extremes may burn leaves. Some succulents tolerate being outside, but St. Louis summers can be intense. I've had them burn up from moving them outside to quickly into the sun. Now I typically keep them indoors all year. If you do choose to move them outside, consider acclimation & a protected area.
Full Shade
Indoor Plant
Easy, vining plant as long as No sun touches it’s leaves. Very tolerant of drought, over watering & small containers. Vines growing upward will produce larger leaves. Vines hanging down will make smaller leaves.

Dry Soil
Perennial houseplant with long lily leaves that produces a large showy red flower. Prefers a sunny window in a small pot that completely dries out between waterings.

Moist soil
Want to challenge your green thumb? This difficult plant may be for you. A tropical evergreen tree that likes sun & moist soil but won’t survive our winters. Takes much love and many years to fruit. Ways to upset this plant: too much light, not enough light, too wet, too dry, plant was moved too much, you looked at it the wrong way.
Bright, Indirect Light
Moist Soil, small container, loves to be misted.
Isn't a heavy feeder, but will set more blooms with a small amount of fertilizer from time to time (every 1-6 months). Happy plants typically bloom both in fall & spring.
Why grow Zygocactus?
They are easy to grow & very forgiving. Zygocactus tolerate some under & overwatering. Small, shallow roots means they prefer small containers & don't have to be repotted as often. Prefering bright indirect light, they tolerate partial shade. Not only are they easy, but they also have numerous large, showy flowers.
What is a Zygocactus?
It is a plant with bilaterally symmetrical, or zygomorphic, leaves. Cactus are experts in water storage, resulting in succulent leaves. Unlike most cactus, zygocactus lack spines & aren't from the desert. Instead they use their water storage skills to grow as epiphytes on rocks & trees in Brazil. They love humidity & can collect water through small hair like roots inbetween leaf segments.. Although misting isn't required, they sure love it. Naturally found under tree canopy, they like very bright indirect light. Too much direct sunlight touching their leaves can burn them.
What species are Zygocactus?
They are often called Holiday, Christmas, Thanksgiving or Easter Cactus here in the U.S. These names derive from them blooming around those holidays.
Schlumbergera truncata. or 'Thanksgiving Cactus' has tube flowers & pointy leaf edges. Most common.
Schlumbergera buckleyi or 'Christmas Cactus' has tube flowers & rounded leaf edges. Rare.
'Easter Cactus' can refer to plants in the Schlumbergera or Rhipsalidopsis genus. They have 'star' flowers & round scalloped leaf edges.
Most of the zygocactus you find for sale, including ours, are Schlumbergera truncata. This is true whether the plant is labeled a 'thanksgiving cactus' or 'christmas cactus'. Schlumbergera buckleyi is the original 'christmas cactus', however it is rare to find. Manipulating temperature & day length can control bloom time. This is done to Schlumbergera truncata. so it can be sold all of December in addition to November. I know, its a confusing mess.
