Native Evergreen Tree
Full Sun-Part Shade
Dry to Moist Soil
30-65' high & 8-25' wide
Technically a Juniper, this is one of only two conifers native to Missouri. It is a crazy hardy plant with a wide range of use. It prefers moist soil in full sun that drains well. One of the few things it doesn't like is standing water, so make sure it can dry out from time to time. The fragrant & color wood is prized for its longevity. They are commonly used in hope chests, cedar closets & outdoor applications
Great for: Borders, privacy, wind protection, erosion, bird habitat & sites too difficult for most plants. Eastern red cedar is dioecious & only female trees produce blue juniper berries.
Tolerates: dry, rocky, shallow, drought, heavy root damage, shade, cold, hot, humid & so far seems to be a quite happy houseplant in our tests.
Avoid: planting Red Cedar anywhere near apple species. Cedar-Apple-Rust is a plant pathogen that relies on both species to complete it's life cycle. Avoid standing water.
